Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
